A Sacramento-area couple started Scenic Vanlife Rentals to fill a growing need in Northern California.
What started as a lifestyle for Emily and Kevin Fannan has turned into a COVID-born camper van business for the couple.
“I wouldn’t say we’re road trip people, but honestly van life is so different,” said Emily. “You’re traveling in your home seeing these beautiful places.”
They traveled for almost a year in a van with all the comforts of home.
“The pandemic hit, and I just felt like I needed a project, and I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to build that van,’” said Kevin. “By the time I was ready to convince Emily to go for it, she was like, ‘I don’t trust your skills, let’s buy one.’”
The Fannans started off going on weekend trips for the first year in their custom van, before selling all of their belongings and traveling across the U.S.
“We were like, ‘This is so cool.’ We like being on the road for 6 or 7 months. Other people should be able to experience this,” Emily said.
The couple launched Scenic Vanlife Rentals this year, to bring people those same experiences.
“So many people message us saying, ‘We want to buy one, but we don’t know what the heck we’re doing, and we’ve never done this before, so let’s rent one and see what we like,’” Emily said.
Travelers can rent a decked-out van or buy one of their own.
“You can park this thing in a regular parking spot, and you can use your own license, and if possible, you can use your own insurance,” said Kevin. “We’ll find you a van, we’ll help design it based on your needs, based on our expertise, and then we’ll get a professional build company to find a slot for you to build it.”
The Fannans say van life is more than just having the freedom to explore at your own pace, it’s the people and the lessons you learn along the way.
“The country is kind of divisive right now, and I have felt that after driving across the country, we’re much more similar than we are different,” Kevin said.
After traveling to 43 states, 30 national parks, and every major city in the U.S., the Fannans say their greatest adventure is yet to come with the arrival of their first child.
“We want to share this with families now that we’re going to have one,” Emily said.
